Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/Today

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.

Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.

How to use this page

[edit]
  1. Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
  2. Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
  3. Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
  4. Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
  5. Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
    1. Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
    2. If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
  6. Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
    1. Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
  7. Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
  8. Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
  9. Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.

Special notes

[edit]

Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion but accidently not listed here.

Discussion for Today

October 28

[edit]

NEW NOMINATIONS

[edit]

Category:Kawajima, Saitama

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Category containing only the main article and an article about a private airfield, both of which are already appropriately categorised. Unhelpful for navigation. AusLondonder (talk) 15:17, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Santiago, Chile

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: The main article is Santiago but this is a very common name for places in Latin America. About half of the subcategories include Chile and half do not. Personally, I'd rather use Santiago, Chile for all but more than anything, I'd like uniformity. Thoughts? User:Namiba 15:15, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Force-feeding

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:COPSEP, as this has a mixture of biographical and non-biographical articles at present --woodensuperman 13:18, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:National Heroes of Saint Kitts and Nevis

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Redundant category. Both categories are about the recipients of this high state honour: Order of the National Hero (Saint Kitts and Nevis) (article title is stable afacs). The official name of the order is "Order of National Hero" (see National Honours Act that established it), so the article title is probably the correct choice and the proposed target the category to keep. Since the recipients seem to often be referred to as "National Heroes" (see Heroes' Day#Saint Kitts and Nevis or the goverment's website, and the linked law includes the statement "... Bradshaw shall be entered into the records as the first National Hero."), I propose merging (leaving a redirect), but maybe there's an argument for deleting Category:National Heroes of Saint Kitts and Nevis or both (although I would say the usual arguments against National Hero categories, WP:OCAWARD or WP:SHAREDNAME, don't apply here). Felida97 (talk) 11:50, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Bass drum players

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Not a defining characteristic for any of these people. As percussionists and drummers, playing the bass drum is a given. Why? I Ask (talk) 06:30, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Fictional mammoths

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: 3 out of 4 of the entries in this category are redirects. Only article is of a book series and not of a fictional mammoth character. (Oinkers42) (talk) 03:40, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Deaths in England by region

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Redundant category layer Mason (talk) 03:35, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Mohouidae

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Mohouidae is a monogeneric family, so there's no point in having a category for it. Category:Mohoua is sufficient. jlwoodwa (talk) 03:23, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:National artists of Thailand

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: I previously raised objection to the decapitalisation of the category title at WT:CFD, though the reversion process seems to have fallen through the cracks. Anyway, as I mentioned in that discussion, the National Artist title is an award, and directly using the award title for the category does feel a bit unnatural. To compare, we don't refer to Academy Award "Best Actors", but "Best Actor winners". Renaming the category as proposed would better reflect the nature of the title, i.e. its being an award, not a job. Paul_012 (talk) 16:51, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Note: I think the proposed form matches the general preference at CfD to follow the article title, though I personally dislike parenthesis in category titles when natural disambiguation is possible. So I'll also list Category:National Artist of Thailand awardees, Category:National Artist awardees of Thailand, Category:Thai National Artist awardees, and Category:Thailand National Artist awardees as alternative suggestions. --Paul_012 (talk) 16:54, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Consensus favors a rename, though no clear consensus on what the new name should be. In particular, thoughts on Josh's comment (which would imply lowercase-a "National artist")?

Category:FL-Class cricket articles of Mid-importance

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: According to WikiProject Cricket's assessment scheme, All lists (including FLs) are assessed as Low-Importance only. Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 17:21, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Same for,
Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 17:25, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Vestrian24Bio: You only put the CFD tag on one of the categories. You are supposed to tag every category that is being considered for deletion. Also, I don't think we typically delete categories like these. QuicoleJR (talk) 15:28, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment: All have now been tagged. Thoughts on the merits of the proposal / is it the case that we don't typically delete categories like these?

  • Comment: These categories are automatically populated by the WikiProject template, so deleting them via CfD won't work; it'll only create red category links on talk pages. If the WikiProject standard is as you say, the incorrect assessments should be corrected first. However, I'm not seeing anything to that effect at the linked assessment page. It only says lists are excluded from Top and High class. The mention of cricket-related lists under Low class is only as an example, not a prescription. --Paul_012 (talk) 17:11, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Just noting that four of these categories are empty. Liz Read! Talk! 20:56, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Vestrian24Bio: I see that you manually emptied the nominated FL-class categories into Low-importance, e.g. [1]. If you're sure that you understood WP:CRICIS correctly, you'd have to do the same on the lists. The empty categories could then be deleted. I have no idea whether there is any feature in the meta template for project banners that would allow a quality class (List) to override an importance class that was explicitly specified e.g. as Mid, and force it to use Low instead. – Fayenatic London 15:48, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean, I will raise this question at the Module talk:WikiProject banner and see if there's a way to suppress the importance assessment. Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 16:08, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Endangered species by reason they are threatened

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: This category has long been used for both extinction-threatened species and extinct species. Separating out extinct species is impractical for reasons detailed on the cat page, and would result in a lot of duplication. Extinct species aren't really threatened in the present tense and "endangered species" is also a counterintuitive way to describe them. Alternate name suggestions welcome. HLHJ (talk) 01:29, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Dumaresq, New South Wales

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Category containing only the main article and an article about a defunct train station. Unhelpful for navigation. AusLondonder (talk) 13:45, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The main article is already categorised in Category:Towns in New England (New South Wales), a region largely overlapping with the Northern Tablelands. AusLondonder (talk) 15:25, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Scindia dynasty of Gwalior

Category:Slavery by war

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: The contents of this category seem to be related to wars about slavery rather than a category that breaks down Slavery by individual wars Mason (talk) 01:54, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. I meant to keep this category separate from Category:Slavery during wars to keep the supercategory more focused on the subject of wartime slavery in general. AHI-3000 (talk) 02:38, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Armenian men by century

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. There category only has 1 century in here, which isn't helpful for navigation. Mason (talk) 00:28, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:American Roman Catholic bishops by contiguous area of the United States

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Vague and non-defining. This category name sounds more like a container category, but the contents are individual bishops. Mason (talk) 00:27, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
